It’s been a quiet month. I dedicated practically all of May into the grunt work for it, and since then it’s been a slow, tedious grind to fill out the rest of it, but the Puchi Carat shrine has been revamped. It’s one of those things I was really excited about working on, and now that it’s over, I’m struggling to remember what my aim actually was. I think my plan was to include just as much information as I possibly could, even stuff like the locations and the map and so on, but I ended up either not having much to work from, or lacking the patience to work with it, so I dropped a whole page and spread its content across other pages. Oh well. Let me know if you enjoy it! (I’ll be interested to hear if people think the design should be less pink, or even more pink)
Also, game music. It’s just stuff I left over from last time, I’m afraid.

Went to see Green Lantern. It’s a decent bit of eye candy.
I admit I was a bit biased when watching it, as I’ve been keeping up a little with DC Comics’ reboot and their marketing strategies – namely, how they expect people who see the movies of their franchises will then want to read more and seek out the comics. Armagideon Times does a better job of talking about it in jaded tones than I would (and is a good read in general, I suggest checking it out), but what it basically boiled to was while watching the movie, I asked myself, “does this movie make me want to learn more about the Green Lantern and their adventures?”

I would prefer to have announced it with a relevant update, but I figure, why not – Otimusya lives!
Yeah, he emailed me earlier in the week, and naturally, it took me several days to get around to reply to him because I’m a shiftless bugger. Basically, he said that he’d stumbled across my stuff of his stuff during his web browsing, and he subsequently found the email I’d sent him back in 2009 – he hadn’t noticed it until now. He gave me his permission to produce the translations, and pointed me towards a new mirror for his site, though he said he won’t be updating it. A pity, but I’m glad his content is still online.

I watched Alien five days ago. Yeah, I’m really dropping the ball on punctual blog entries these days.
Mind you, what is there to say that more professional, more qualified and more verbose people haven’t already said? It’s insanely atmospheric and lonely, and I love it. The first hour very much reminded me of Life Force (which you may recall me gushing about two years ago), with its very cold and lonely exploration of an alien ship, though Alien came first, of course. In a way I was almost disappointed when the alien started killing dudes full-time, not because it wasn’t entertaining, but because it had less time to explore the dank and desolate environment of space. I’m a total sucker for that kind of stuff.
I also watched The Hudsucker Proxy… half a month ago? Yeah, it was part of a Coen Brothers boxset and was one of the only two movies I was vaguely familiar with (the other being The Big Lebowski). I only became aware of the film through Platypus Comix’s very entertaining synopsis of the film with comments and other titbits of information – it’s a very good read. Also, hey, have I plugged the site before? I probably should!

I like things!*
I received two packages in the mail today. One was Alleyway for the Game Boy, a game I already have on at least two multi-cartridges and isn’t anything exciting, but I bought it in hopes of the manual expanding upon the rather ridiculous story cooked up by the blurb on the back of the box. No such luck, the manual is about as boring as stale cheese. Mind you, what kind of moron thinks a manual for a paddle-and-ball game would actually have any interesting reading material in it? Only a total moron, that’s what!
The second package was a lot less disappointing, and I’d dare say its contents were pretty damn delightful!

I said I’d have an update prepared for October, didn’t I? I’m really sorry I haven’t anything to show. I am working on a couple of things, but I haven’t really had the motivation to do as much work on them as I’d like to, partly because my attempts at improving my web design skills is also a total misery, and work is just getting me down. It’s a shame, as I definitely would’ve liked to at least have gotten something finished. Random Hoo Haas is five years old, and I commemorate the event by being a lazy bastard.
For once in my life, I’d like to be able to live up to my promises.

So, before Sonic 4 sidetracked me, what newly bought game was I going to talk about two weeks ago? Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, that’s what! I finished Banjo-Tooie again recently (well, okay, I got all the Jiggies in Grunty Industries, and personally that’s enough of a trial for me to say I’ve beaten the game) so I’ve been hungering for more of the same. I picked this up about three weeks ago in CeX for a mere £6, and I could hardly turn it down. I’d been meaning to get the game via the Games On Demand service under the belief that it would directly support Rare… but seriously, £6! Screw attempts at generosity, I can hardly argue with a price like that.
I say I was hoping for more of the same, but I’m aware the Nuts & Bolts is basically a whole new direction for the series. It’s still an adventure game about collecting trinkets to open up new areas and unlock abilities of some kind, but now the emphasis is on vehicular building. However, it’s more accurate to say the game is an entirely different specimen with a light coating of Banjo slathered over it, as really, it’s a whole different game.

I was going to talk a little about some games I’ve been playing lately (two recently bought, one I haven’t played in ten years), but then I realised, whoops, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is out and I haven’t made any cynical remarks on it yet!

Long-time homebrew Sert (who you’ve probably seen referred to as Aodhán on the site but referring to people by their real names apparently isn’t hip these days) has set up yet another blog, Dual Screens and Caffeine Dreams. He’s precisely the kind of guy who I’d love to hype… if he actually had a site that didn’t become dormant within five minutes and then gradually vanish off the face of the internet. It’d had three entries within two days, so here’s hoping it’ll work this time! I’d consider him my mentor in the realm of humour and quirky choice of video games, though I clearly went in the direction of vulgarity and bad taste while Sert still maintains an aura of decency. Keep on rockin’, buddy.
On the subject of quirky video games, remember when I actually talked about games I was currently playing on the blog? And then I thought, why bother, because I’ll eventually write up about it for Games I Own? And then that section became dangerously outdated and cumbersomely managed and it’s only if you browse the Flying Omelette forums that you keep track of what games I’m playing at the minute? Yeah, whatever happened to that?
