Sneaking in a quick Bomberman update with Bomberman 2001, a game that barely existed as a game. Any chance of finding new information it via search engines had already been squandered when at least three forum threads sprung up about it, so I might as well chuck this up. If someone happened to have raided that E3 booth seventeen years ago and done a runner with its contents, maybe we’ll learn something!
Despite no intentions of another yearly review article, I still keep track of the media I consume. I played nearly sixty games this year and watched eighty-something movies… and I’ve, like, barely anything to say about any of them. I’ll try and squeeze out some thoughts on the noteworthy ones under the cut!

“Her hunky alter-go, Jake, must then learn how to behave like a man, negotiating such everyday laddish hazards as dating, bragging and public urinal etiquette.”
from N64 Magazine issue 17 (July 1998)
This headline always caught my eye, but I must never have actually read it, because it’s basically a load of guff about Nintendo dropping product placement in some off-beat sex comedy, Virtual Sexuality. I couldn’t find any other mention of Nintendo’s involvement in the film anywhere else, and I didn’t see many people talking about the movie online… so you know what I did? I sat down and watched it.
… who’s up for a film review?

It wasn’t what I had planned for this month’s update, but here’s something: another chapter of that Zelda playthrough!
What I had planned was a “some games I played in 2012” article, only this time I’d also be covering books, movies, TV shows and whatever else of interest. It got a bit hideously long and half the stuff I didn’t write notes for, so most of the early entries amount to “I think it was okay, I guess?” Which admittedly isn’t that far off from my real reviews.
It might show up eventually, but it’s not even half-finished yet. I’ll see what happens! To tide you over, here’s the review I wrote for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which was shown on BBC1 around Christmas.

In a word: Charmless.

What strange and startling developments have occurred in the life of Ragey over the past four months?
Not much, really. Well, for starters, my feet have somehow been inflicted with every injury known to man – scrapes, bruises, blisters, cuts, everything short of frostbite, from the heel to the sides to the toes. And even the sides of my toes. And given how my personal solution to every health problem in existence is “walk it off”, it’s pretty aggravating! It doesn’t help that every pair of boots I have seems to be the cause of these inconveniences. Who can you trust when you can’t trust your own shoes?
I went to see the new James Bond flick recently, Skyfall. Twice, even! Was it just that good? Well, it just happened to be a decent movie to view with two lots of family members. Thanks to having not one but two opportunities to discuss it with folks, here’s a fat stack of words about it! Spoilers ahoy.

I’ve actually watched a fair few movies in the past few months, but just haven’t had the interest or energy to review them – and also because who cares? (for those who do care, I aim to have one of those “Games I Played in 2012” articles by the end of the year and will cover TV and movies and books and whatnot, simply because I ain’t got nothing better to put on the website!)
I watched Prometheus last night, though, and figured I might as well waffle a bit to keep up with my reviews of the Alien quadrilogy (I just love how hilariously dumb that word is – I’d use it in every sentence if I could. Somebody stop me!). Spoilers ahoy.

Bomberman Fantasy Race has been ported to the new layout. Not much actually new, but you don’t have to look at that awful dark green tiled backdrop any more.
Watched The Birds. A few days ago I’d caught that episode of The Simpsons that parodies it with the babies in the daycare centre, and figured, hey, let’s check out the source material!
Melanie Daniels, entranced by a hotshot lawyer named Mitch that pesters her in a pet shop, seeks out his home to bask in his company for a while longer. Mitch lives with his mother and sister, and is apparently renowned for being a bit of a lady killer; the local school teacher lived far away once, but chose to stay to be in touch with him. Mitch’s mother worries not that her son will be with another woman, but fears of being abandoned with no one to love her. As such, Melanie earns her automatic scorn, but as time goes by, the two wind up warming up a little to each other, with the hope that eventually HEY HOLY SHIT BIRD ATTACK

Went to see Avengers Assemble. Can’t say I was too disappointed, really. Expected some superhero rompy-time fun, and that’s precisely what I got.
Just for giggles, let’s see if I can save myself the time of recapping and let a picture do the talking.
… just pretend that the Hulk, Hawkeye and Black Widow are there, and they’re all gonna beat up Loki because he’s doing bad stuff, right? It’s close enough.
(I could’ve had the Hulk and Loki, but you wouldn’t believe the resale prices on their minifigures, it’s bloody sacrilege!)

I watched Inception on April 13. Here’s a review from then!
Heh. The internet has been raving up and down about it since its release… what, two years ago? I can’t even count the amount of Cracked articles there are about it, and apparently dubbing something mildly paradoxical as “[noun]-CEPTION” is the height of internet hilarity. Not to mention all the discussions that have erupted over it. I suppose there’s good reason to be nuts over it.
But you know me, I don’t really do anything everyone else is doing. Skyrim? Not for me – yet! Inception? Pfft, please! Using a combination of male and female sexual organs for pleasure and/or producing offspring? God, everyone’s been doing that! Let me know when people have found a way of making our genitalia into short-wave radio transmitters and then I’ll be interested.

Went to see John Carter last night. Had no expectations, but definitely enjoyed myself – it’s not the far-out, totally alien sci-fi experience I’ve been interested in seeing on the big screen, but it’s a fun ol’ romp with some fantastic eye candy.
I’d be lying if I said I completely understood the story, though. At the core there’s a basic seen-it-a-million-times “white guy goes to another planet, has a unique power (jumping really high!) the locals don’t have and unites all the warring races against one bad dude, and probably gets the girl too if that’s the way he swings, and there’s some drama about whether or not he wants to go home that depends on how cool the new planet is.” And there’s also immortal dudes who can shape shift and dictate the course of the solar system, and they plot evil shit.
Okay, that probably wasn’t as basic as I thought it was, but you get my drift, surely.
