Some movies I watched in 2025: Lightyear

You thought you were getting a movie review as a reprieve from two entries of Battletoads content? Surprise! This is actually an extremely contrived continuation of that conversation! Buckle in, suckers!

A couple of dear friends invited me to see Lightyear in cinemas in 2022, and it was a nice time, if largely just enjoying the company of pals I had not seen in two years because of the pandemic. I’ve very little to remark about it that armies of dedicated Disney reviewers haven’t already picked apart.
I thought it was pleasant enough! You can see its themes and character arcs coming a mile away, and its third act feels like it drops the ball in some regard, but it’s just nice to see a CGI animated film that’s a straightforward sci-fi romp. It’s not interrupted by musical numbers, or transforming the cast into animals — you get what you sign up for, more or less.

At least, I got what I expected! Scampy of The Spirochaete Trail discussed the film’s various foibles, from its wishy-washy marketing campaign that made people just expect more Toy Story, to even its text prelude that gives the impression this is setting itself up to be a ’90s throwback.
The latter was a thorn in a lot of people’s sides, apparently; I can understand the internal discussions that might’ve led to its inclusion, but I figured the movie ought to do the talking instead of three lines of intro text.

Some movies I watched in 2024: Space Jam

I’ve mentioned pal ShaolinTurtle before, and bless his heart, he’s a terrible man for exposing himself to obnoxious discussions or terrible opinions, only to rant about it to no one on Discord. One such occasion was an inexplicable comparison between Sonic the Hedgehog‘s Rouge the Bat, and Space Jam‘s Lola Bunny.
Because we are both insufferable dweebs, we had lots of opinions on Rouge and how she’s a far more capable character than she’s often depicted, but were coming up short on defences for Lola. Time to take notes and expose everyone to an impromptu watch party, then!

Some movies I watched in 2024: Cool World

I’ve a bad habit of absorbing random information about esoteric subjects, despite never otherwise exposing myself to them. As such, I’ve picked up a buttload of trivia and opinions about Ralph Bakshi productions over the past decades, despite having only seen his Lord of the Rings adaptation and a couple episodes of the 1960s Spider-Man cartoon. I have heard many things about Cool World, few of them positive. So… fuck it. Let’s watch Cool World.

Some movies I watched in 2024: Izzy Gets The Fuck Across Town

Monday, May 12, 2025 at 1:04 pm Comments Off on Some movies I watched in 2024: Izzy Gets The Fuck Across Town

I am a dope who’s managed to ignore multiple cinematic classics for decades, but I’ll pick up a random film on a whim on the most idle of notions. I asked myself, “have I seen anything Haley Joel Osment has been in?”, saw this striking title on IMDb and figured, I might as well make this my first…!

Izzy has a mission: to crash a wedding. Only she’s on the wrong side of town and her car is on the fritz, so she winds up pulling every favour she can to get where she wants to go. We don’t know quite why Izzy’s looking to crash this wedding, or whose wedding it even is, but we pick it up as we go.
Izzy is quirky at best — she’s a dreamer, young and wild and full of big ambitions, a stronger believer in love and fate, with a knack for getting people to see things on her wavelength. At worst, she’s a self-absorbed wreck of a human being, mooching and coasting on other people’s couches waiting for the stars to align before she dares to make something of herself.

Some games I played in 2017

Sunday, December 31, 2017 at 10:10 pm Comments (1)

Sneaking in a quick Bomberman update with Bomberman 2001, a game that barely existed as a game. Any chance of finding new information it via search engines had already been squandered when at least three forum threads sprung up about it, so I might as well chuck this up. If someone happened to have raided that E3 booth seventeen years ago and done a runner with its contents, maybe we’ll learn something!
Despite no intentions of another yearly review article, I still keep track of the media I consume. I played nearly sixty games this year and watched eighty-something movies… and I’ve, like, barely anything to say about any of them. I’ll try and squeeze out some thoughts on the noteworthy ones under the cut!

ONM Remembered – #152

Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 11:00 am Comments Off on ONM Remembered – #152

“Her hunky alter-go, Jake, must then learn how to behave like a man, negotiating such everyday laddish hazards as dating, bragging and public urinal etiquette.”

from N64 Magazine issue 17 (July 1998)

This headline always caught my eye, but I must never have actually read it, because it’s basically a load of guff about Nintendo dropping product placement in some off-beat sex comedy, Virtual Sexuality. I couldn’t find any other mention of Nintendo’s involvement in the film anywhere else, and I didn’t see many people talking about the movie online… so you know what I did? I sat down and watched it.

… who’s up for a film review?

Playing chess with cards

It wasn’t what I had planned for this month’s update, but here’s something: another chapter of that Zelda playthrough!

What I had planned was a “some games I played in 2012” article, only this time I’d also be covering books, movies, TV shows and whatever else of interest. It got a bit hideously long and half the stuff I didn’t write notes for, so most of the early entries amount to “I think it was okay, I guess?” Which admittedly isn’t that far off from my real reviews.
It might show up eventually, but it’s not even half-finished yet. I’ll see what happens! To tide you over, here’s the review I wrote for Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, which was shown on BBC1 around Christmas.

In a word: Charmless.

Skythump

Sunday, November 25, 2012 at 12:16 am Comments Off on Skythump

What strange and startling developments have occurred in the life of Ragey over the past four months?

Not much, really. Well, for starters, my feet have somehow been inflicted with every injury known to man – scrapes, bruises, blisters, cuts, everything short of frostbite, from the heel to the sides to the toes. And even the sides of my toes. And given how my personal solution to every health problem in existence is “walk it off”, it’s pretty aggravating! It doesn’t help that every pair of boots I have seems to be the cause of these inconveniences. Who can you trust when you can’t trust your own shoes?

I went to see the new James Bond flick recently, Skyfall. Twice, even! Was it just that good? Well, it just happened to be a decent movie to view with two lots of family members. Thanks to having not one but two opportunities to discuss it with folks, here’s a fat stack of words about it! Spoilers ahoy.

My android’s head is an asshole!

I’ve actually watched a fair few movies in the past few months, but just haven’t had the interest or energy to review them – and also because who cares? (for those who do care, I aim to have one of those “Games I Played in 2012” articles by the end of the year and will cover TV and movies and books and whatnot, simply because I ain’t got nothing better to put on the website!)
I watched Prometheus last night, though, and figured I might as well waffle a bit to keep up with my reviews of the Alien quadrilogy (I just love how hilariously dumb that word is – I’d use it in every sentence if I could. Somebody stop me!). Spoilers ahoy.

Drunken Irishman correctly predicts end of the world

Bomberman Fantasy Race has been ported to the new layout. Not much actually new, but you don’t have to look at that awful dark green tiled backdrop any more.

Watched The Birds. A few days ago I’d caught that episode of The Simpsons that parodies it with the babies in the daycare centre, and figured, hey, let’s check out the source material!

Melanie Daniels, entranced by a hotshot lawyer named Mitch that pesters her in a pet shop, seeks out his home to bask in his company for a while longer. Mitch lives with his mother and sister, and is apparently renowned for being a bit of a lady killer; the local school teacher lived far away once, but chose to stay to be in touch with him. Mitch’s mother worries not that her son will be with another woman, but fears of being abandoned with no one to love her. As such, Melanie earns her automatic scorn, but as time goes by, the two wind up warming up a little to each other, with the hope that eventually HEY HOLY SHIT BIRD ATTACK
