Vertical

I watched Vertigo yesterday. I won’t deny it’s one of those classic movies that, although great to finally see, didn’t offer many surprises since it’s been parodied so many times. Heck, the Sledge Hammer! episode “Vertical” basically compresses the two hour-long movie into 22 minutes without too many omissions, if you don’t mind it being totally out-of-character and losing out on Hitchcock’s great visuals.

The visuals were the true treat for watching the film – it’s practically a glamour video for 1950s San Francisco! So many beautiful landscapes combined with terrific frame work – it’s a great story and all, but goddamn, those sights! And everyone had such terrific eyebrows. I’d dare say it’s a very sexy film for people who like landscapes and eyebrows. I can’t be the only one, can I?

Snappy, happy monkey

Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 8:16 pm Comments Off on Snappy, happy monkey

I can owe a number of trivial audio-related parts of my life to the cassettes my dad would play while driving me to primary school years and years ago. Most importantly, it introduced me to The Goon Show, which probably led into my interest in radio production and absurdist humour. It introduced me to Flanders & Swann, I heard the story of The Hobbit without ever touching the original novel, and I was probably subjected to the theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood more times than any child should be.

It also meant I got to listen to Little Red Monkey by Joy Nichols, Dick Bentley and Jimmy Edwards a bunch of times. For whatever reason, the song freaked me out when I was a kid.

Don’t look a gift mule in the mouth

I was going to say that I wouldn’t trust an equine wearing tights… but then I realised that was just the tint of its wings.
I wouldn’t trust one wearing wings, either.

Today’s observation: Replacing all usages of the word “epic” with “big ol'” makes it infinitely more charming. Kirby’s Big Ol’ Yarn. Big Ol’ Mickey. Big Ol’ Comics. Big ol’ poetry. Big Ol’ of Gilgamesh.

Les Gees!

Friday, December 2, 2011 at 2:12 pm Comments (4)

I watched The Iron Giant last night. I’m in one of those miserable curmudgeon-y moods where I’m totally uninspired and a colossal bore and curse arbitrarily to myself (because that’s what bummed people do!), and as such I’m really disappointed that I don’t even have much to say about it. But I really quite enjoyed it! The visual style was really slick and colourful and just gosh darn swell, and for a simple story, it carries itself pretty well. I might even have to admit it tugged on my heart strings a little. I can definitely see what all the fuss is about. Bonus points for John Mahoney voicing the army general, because I just love the dude’s voice.

So there’s this cartoon that I’ve caught more episodes of than I’d liked to; it’s not dreadful or anything (I have to appreciate the effort!), but something about it just plain irks me, y’know. It’s called The Gees.

Russian Roulette with an anus

It began as a “today’s observation.” Then it grew into a blog entry. Then I realised I had enough literal and figurative bullshit here to warrant its own HTML document. Not that I’m sure it actually deserves it or not, but it’s up now. Read at your own risk.

No, seriously. Unless you want to read a few dozen paragraphs each with plentiful varied synonyms for canine faecal matter, you might want to give it a miss.

The first General Writing in over a year and this is what it is. It’s not exactly what I hoped for, I’ll say that much. Not that it wasn’t a laugh, though.

(it’s gonna be fun seeing this blog entry title at the bottom of the main page!)

Fingere, fingere!

It’s that time of year, so you know what to expect from the blog: Blah blah cold, blah blah misery, blah blah needlessly graphic descriptions of snot and undesired bodily functions.

I watched Volere Volare (or Wanting To Fly), an Italian movie my dad must have recorded off TV about twenty years ago.
Maurizio works in the dubbing business, dubbing silent cartoons with his own sounds, and frequently visits hardware stores to buy new instruments for their sound effects (his brother, meanwhile, hauls in scantily-clad women to dub pornography). Martina is a freelance… “social worker,” who ‘entertains’ clients in whatever they wish to do, such as a couple who roleplay grieving each others’ death; a taxi driver who revels in terrorizing customers; and a chef who decorates her legs and buttocks like a cake.

Pick up the pieces

Monday, November 21, 2011 at 1:07 pm Comments Off on Pick up the pieces

Playing catch up. Did I ever talk about the revamp of the Bomberman shrine? I’m tired and have a cold and barely remember. Either way, I’ve uploaded what I’ve finished of it, as a lot of the content has been kicking about for a few months now. There’s not much new! The revamp was mostly to ditch all that horrible Frontpage code, and so I can upload all the stuff I hadn’t before, like magazine scans and manuals and stuff. A lot of that stuff had only been posted on the Bomberman Board, but now you can access it from the site. Whoop.
Will the shrine see much updates in the future? Aheh. The best I can say is “I’ll see what happens.” You should know by now that anything I start goes hideously unfinished.
I haven’t checked the uploaded version extensively yet, but I didn’t encounter any problems viewing my offline files. If there’s any cock-ups, let me know.

Also, some music for the game music page. A lot of it’s been sitting around for months, too! You can tell which ones are leftovers from months ago by how long the song descriptions are.

Quite proud of these. The scale gives me a headache, though – you wouldn’t believe how much grief I had over the size of Splash Woman’s head.

Ugly motherfuckers have feelings too!

I watched Predator 1 and 2 over the past couple of weeks, and last night I watched Predators. Unless I want to subject myself to the Aliens vs. Predators films (and given how I burst out laughing when my brother recapped the plot of the second one, I can’t imagine I will), I’ve had my fix of Predator-related entertainment.

Wandering the void between zero and infinity

You know you’re a miserable, directionless mess when completing another stage of Tetris Plus is the highlight of your day.

I watched the entirety of Saber Marionette J back in July – that’s three series, about 57 episodes in total. It had its ups and downs (some long, drawn-out, poorly-paced downs towards the end), but I quite enjoyed watching it. I enjoyed it so much that I’d made plans to cover it for Random Action Hour, and wrote up pages for the first four episodes… and then kind of lost the energy and motivation to keep it up. They’ve been kicking about for three months now, so I figure I might as well make them public. I wouldn’t count on seeing any more episodes in the foreseeable future, mind you.
