The wealthy merchant Ogust Corandum, husband of Ribin and father of Sapphire and Thyst, was evidently not the greatest father in the world - at least, so far as we can tell when Sapphire got sick of her greedy, dominating parents and decided to become a sorceress (mentored by Paz for the primary purpose of transforming them into beasts.
While his wife got off relatively well by becoming some sort of amalgam of anime fetishes, poor Ogust became a fully-fledged beast. Now identified as By, he's a large, rotund, rabbit-like creature of uncertain origins, though his physical appearance isn't his only problem. His memory was affected by the spell, though not to the extent of Peridot; he can still identify his family, even his wife in her new form, but he cannot remember his own name anymore. In addition, he cannot communicate with anyone as he is now limited to speaking in a nonsense animal language.
Naturally, he's quite unhappy. His own daughter has turned against him and totally forgotten about him; his wife has forgotten of his existence and become a shameless harlot; and his youngest daughter is frightened of his new form. He's also quite miffed at Paz for leading Sapphire astray, but the biggest source of angst is that, in his beastial form, he can't actually achieve much.
He's chosen to exile himself to the Forest of Obsidian, a place that is off-limits to humans. He is addicted to shiny objects, possibly a hold-over from his days as a merchant, and spends his time in the forest digging for jadeite wit his pickaxe.

Just for clarity, his name is pronounced "bee".
By's family name is translated differently between the Game Boy and PlayStation versions, but never accurately. If we're keeping up with the gem theme, it should be translated as "Corundum".
By is only ever officially referred to as a "beast." Characters mistake him for a bear and a rabbit among other creatures, though he actually is, if anything, is never explained.
By has the fortune of gracing all home ports of the game on both sides of the pond. You could theorise this is because of him being the root of many character relations in the story, but it's likely due to Pokémon fever swamping the nation at the time of release. Anything cute and fuzzy and anime would totally appeal to kids, never mind the fact he's actually an old guy transformed into a cute form. Because kids totally don't mind that at all.
By shows you how to play the game.
By gets mistaken for every animal under the sun.
By overcomes his speech impediment.
By yearns to become human - and actually succeeds! Sort of.
By's attack pattern is to fill all rows but two on the far left. Similar to Pearl's, it's slightly more effective at cluttering the opponent's screen and filling their gaps, but also gives them a greater window to break it away. It allows more chance for offence, at the expense of a little defence.
When facing By as an opponent, the gap at the left is convenient for nipping in and tearing it apart from the side.
