2-byte RAM address 804 (C804 in VisualBoyAdvance) is the player character's current frame of animation. Freezing and changing that will allow you to swap to any sprite in the game, including enemies, effects and HUD elements.

Objects use at least two palettes at once to provide all their colours; you may need to change them at RAM address C010 onward. I think I just chose palette indexes with no overlap, then recoloured them later.
