As a build-up to Metal Slug 3's development, there's a shocking amount of elements introduced in that game lurking inside Metal Slug X's code!
A big cheers to Mr_Beacon00 (信标先生) for working out a way to see these, and making all the discoveries on this page! His code replaces one of the prisoners in Mission 1 with whatever object ID is assigned. To see these for yourself, it requires the usage of Cheat Engine 6.83 and this .CT address table. It's optimised for use with WinKawaks 1.65.
To use:
- Open Cheat Engine 6.8.3 and open the cheat table.
- Open WinKawaks and load Metal Slug X.
- Click "Select a process to open" in Cheat Engine and choose WinKawaks.
If there are numbers under the Values column, success!
If not, double-click the Address of the cheats and confirm that the .EXE file under Pointer matches the .EXE at the top of Cheat Engine's window. If the Address is "WinKawaks.EXE" but the window says "WinKawaks 1.65.EXE", you'll have to add that "1.65" to it!
This code will modify the object ID of the prisoner partway into Mission 1, after defeating the Landseek and R-Shobu, but only when it is off-screen, before it has 'loaded' into the level; no change will occur while the object is on-screen.
"Obj ID" is the core object, while "Obj Sub ID A", "B", etc., are modifiers that vary from object to object; some will change enemy behaviour, some determine what objects crates and prisoners are holding, movement speed, direction, and other properties.
The Obj ID increases in increments of 4 - setting the value to anything in between will crash or freeze the game.
For best results, make a save state after defeating the camel so you can quickly change values, and set all Sub IDs to 0.
ID: 728
The CEO/president hostage first encountered in Metal Slug 3. Although the sound effect can be found in the sound test, he does not say his signature "hi!", nor does he count towards the prisoner tally. He also can't be freed from his bonds with a melee attack, the player only uses their gun.
ID: 768
The Ostrich Slug! It functions largely as it should, though its vulcan cannon keeps flashing for some reason. It doesn't jump as high nor get a speed boost when jumping, unlike its future appearances.
ID: 772
The Elephant Slug! It walks slower than in Metal Slug 3, but its Slug Attack is faster. There's no means of testing whether its fire breath attack is functional.
ID: 776
The Slug Copter! Its bombs drop in very shallow arcs and cannot be dropped as quickly in succession; they also produce a different explosion than in its later appearances. Its vulcan cannon fires rectangular shots, not ovaloid.
ID: 780
The Slug Mariner! It also fires rectangular shots, rather than the small shots that are impaired by gravity. Its animation when resetting to neutral after moving are slower than in Metal Slug 3. You cannot exit the vehicle once you have entered, and there is no Slug Attack to make it self-destruct.
ID: 784
The Drill Slug! It has no collision detection for enemy attacks, and its Slug Attack has it slowly accelerate ala the Metal Slug, unlike its proper debut where it shoots forward like a rocket.
ID: 792
The Rebel LV Armor! All the graphics are present, but it's otherwise not in good shape. Its animations and movements are slow with staggering amounts of wind-up, and it has no visual reaction to damage. It will play its firing animation but cannot fire any guns, except for its cannon. Its Slug Attack also features a wind-up, and retains the rider inside its cockpit, meaning it looks like there are two Marcos on-screen!
ID: 1184
The Japanese soldiers retain their suicide attacks, but use a different explosion and do not damage the player. Setting Sub-ID E to "1" will make them instantly retreat after landing, with a cartoonishly fast running animation.
Notably, almost all MS3 enemies will drops item upon defeat by default; Sub-ID C will change their item. This is probably placeholder code they'd finetune during showtime.

A small jellyfish. Can be shot and destroyed, but otherwise appears non-functional.
