Bomberman Portable

miscellany

enemy origins

Similar to the DS game, this features the return appearance of many enemies and bosses who haven't been seen in a long time! There are a lot less artistic liberties compared to that game, the 3D models hewing as close to the official artwork as possible, though classic enemies

All but two of the bosses are lifted directly from prior games, and Super Bomberman in particular makes a splash with both Spiderer and Bigaron, the latter even getting an enhanced form with two hammers and a red paint job.

Bomberman Hero gets a shocking amount of representation, featuring Fuwafuwa, Buubuu, Pyonpyon, Regin, Denden, and Snow Bomb Head.

A number of notable gimmick enemies from Super Bomberman 3 make the leap: Megadon, Gashin, Icetower, and Farah, though the last two don't retain their abilities.

Bomberman World's rogues gallery includes Missile Man, Typhoon, and two colour variants of Pyonta and Kuroman. Gattain is arguably a carry-over from Super Bomberman 3's Machineda, but its appearance and internal name cement it as a reference to the PlayStation game.

Golem, Gargoyle, and Mummy hail from Bomberman Tournament, particularly owing to their illustrated depictions more than their in-game sprites.

Bomberman Max brings us Speeder, Fantoma, and a recoloured Sorcery. Bibin, Robodash, and Fiber represent Super Bomberman 2... truthfully, Fiber looks like something different entirely, but there's some recognisable shapes there and a similar attack pattern. It's just hard to overlook the big weird catfish lips!

Games with only enemy to their name are Pocket Bomberman's Gain, Super Bomberman 4's Doronpa, Baku Bomberman's Spriggan, Rangey from Bomberman Max 2... and of all things, Bomber Robo from the PlayStation game, which wasn't even an enemy but instead a Battle Mode hazard!

Remnants of a debug mode are visible in the code, allowing the user to boot into any level of the Normal, Classic, and Battle game.
There is readable code names in the data for enemy behaviour, which confirms the romanisation for particular enemies and bosses, such as Bigalon, Rangey, and Magnehel. It's not without its foibles, like "Gargoil" for World 4's Gargoyles, or "Brocker", presumably for the enemies disguised as blocks.
