Super Bomberman

Title (Japanese)

スーパーボンバーマン / Super Bomberman

A 4-koma gag strip by Atsushi Musashino (むさしのあつし), published in Monthly CoroCoro Comic (月刊コロコロコミック) from March 1993 to September 2002, before moving to the bi-monthly Bessatsu/Supplementary CoroCoro Comic (別冊コロコロコミック) for its final run from October 2002 until October 2005.
It also ran in Shogaku Sannensei (小学三年生) under the title Blazing Bomb Battles Super Bomberman (炎の爆弾戦士スーパーボンバーマン) from April 1995 to February 1998 [src].

A gag comic through and through, most commonly in 4-koma (four-panel) format, though occasionally breaking the format to tell a story across multiple pages. It focuses on the dumb antics from the various Bombermen; the hot-blooded buffoon Shirobon, the in-it-to-win-it Kurobon, the high-strung gal Akabon, the unlucky schmuck Aobon, and more.
Characters from new game releases were introduced into the strips, including the Five Dastardly Bombers, the Bomber Shitennou and Max, though the four Bombermen always remained the central focus. The author is depicted in some stories as Musabon (むさボン), a Bomberman with black hair, a plaid shirt and glasses with "mu" (む) and "sa" (さ) on each lens.

Early strips focused heavily on using elements from the Battle Game for comedic pratfalls, such as power-ups and warpholes, but even then it played fast and loose with its setting, throwing the characters into a variety of predicaments. Common settings depicted them as weary salarymen, private investigators, or in Japanese home life. Most strips end with characters being blown up, maimed, or otherwise performing a grotesque wild-take.

4-koma from Super Bomberman Vol. 1

The longest running of all Bomberman manga, and perhaps the most prolific, having been collected in twelve volumes, featured strips in numerous Shogakukan game guides, and even appearing as bonus unlockable galleries in the Bomberman Land games and spinoffs. [src]
Even after its run in CoroCoro came to a close, Musashino continued with a similar strip on his personal website titled Keep It Up, Musabon (つつけるんだ むさぼん), focusing almost exclusively on the author's stand-in character. It ran a new strip every month from September 2005 until October 2010.

The various collected editions and releases outside of the core CoroCoro Comic magazines.

It's Musashino: An author's bio and a list of most of his published works, including the various Super Bomberman collected editions, guidebooks and video games they appear in.

Diary early-2005: Some reminiscing on the May 31st entry, of doing autograph sessions at a Hi-Ten Bomberman event and wanting to have a go himself. "Let me play!" "These kids would trash you. Don't quit your day job." He also announces his work will be in Bomberman Land 3 and he did promotional comics for Bomberman DS.

Diary late-2005: The series' conclusion is announced on September 1st... and four days later the continuation Keep It Up, Musabon begins. He asks Hudson and Shogakukan to get in touch if he's infringing on their properties, and jokes what he can do when his stand-in is the only established character. "What kind of stories can I tell with a handicap like that? I'm ready, though!!! I did this for 12 years, I can keep it rollin' for 100 more!!!"
