{"id":344,"date":"2012-09-09T11:00:53","date_gmt":"2012-09-09T11:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/blog\/?p=344"},"modified":"2012-09-09T14:47:15","modified_gmt":"2012-09-09T14:47:15","slug":"onm-remembered-28","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/blog\/?p=344","title":{"rendered":"ONM Remembered &#8211; #28"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-size: x-large;\">&#8220;Gather round, my little sealettes&#8230;&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118a.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"i hope the artist got paid well for this. both the mag and the fan art entries got serious mileage out of it\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118ath.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nfrom Official Nintendo Magazine issue 58 (July 1997)<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In the very first issue of ONM I&#8217;d ever picked up, the letters page was answered not by one of the magazine&#8217;s staff&#8230; but instead by a surly sea mammal called <strong>Seal<\/strong>. <strong>The Seal of No Quality<\/strong>, to be precise.<br \/>\nA snarky, foul-mannered prick, he was prone to insulting the readers&#8217; intelligence; talking about how stupid the PlayStation is; praising Nintendo Official Magazine, and informing people of the difference between 50hz and 60hz video displays. Despite that, readers seemed to love him, and the letters page was littered in fan art and requests for more info about Seal. For whatever reason, he had an unexplained hatred of the magazine&#8217;s editor, Simon Clays. He wasn&#8217;t the only one badmouthing him, poor ed was the subject of many reader-submitted letters, game ideas and fan art that revolved around tormenting the man in a number of creative fashions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118e.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"i really hope the real Simon Clays actually wore that white and green striped &quot;NMS New Editor&quot; shirt when he first joined\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118eth.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118f.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"yes, seal has a tree instead of a lower body. who knew?\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118fth.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"184\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As if it wasn&#8217;t enough for the letters page to be helmed by a fictional character with an <strong>agenda<\/strong>, he also had a fictional girlfriend, Geri Haliwhale.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nNo, I&#8217;m serious.<br \/>\nLook, it was dumb as all hell, but you lived with it because where else would you read the latest news on great titles like <em>Body Harvest<\/em>? <strong>Nowhere<\/strong>, that&#8217;s where. Okay, there were a bunch of other Nintendo mags, most of which had humans answering mail&#8230; but why would you buy a Nintendo mag that <em>didn&#8217;t<\/em> have a scowling creature of the deep in charge of letter duty? It&#8217;s the ultimate catch-22, my friend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118c.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"please ignore my giant arm hair on the scan. i said no, but it still tried to find a way to get onto the website.\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118cth.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118b.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"is there no elment of popular culture seal's fans have left untouched?\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118bth.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"137\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By issue 61 (or earlier?), the Seal&#8217;s Mailbag pages were renamed Club Mario and answered by ONM staff <span style=\"font-size: xx-small;\">(okay, not exactly &#8211; every answer was prefaced with &#8220;<strong>ONM<\/strong>&#8220;, never a staff member&#8217;s name, so for all I know it could have been the office dustbin answering them)<\/span>, while letters to Seal were lumped into a column at the end. The character and his column stuck around until issue 68, when the character was retired.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Apparently Seal wasn&#8217;t the magazine&#8217;s first fictional member of staff &#8211; in the mag&#8217;s early days as Nintendo Magazine System (long before I started collecting it), the letters page had <strong>Skull<\/strong>. It sounds so bad it&#8217;s hard to believe, but I&#8217;d believe it. You can read all about it (and then some) at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fryingbear.com\/articles\/creativecritters.php\"> <strong> Frying Bear<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/onmems-118d.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"yeah, beats me. answers on a postcard, anyone?\" src=\"https:\/\/randomhoohaas.flyingomelette.com\/bl\/onm\/thumb\/onmems-118dth.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"354\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&#8230; and because I&#8217;ve no idea where else to put it, here&#8217;s some fan art from the same issue, featuring the magazine&#8217;s staff in <em>Star Wars<\/em>.
