Planet Bomber was a peaceful planet, protected by five spirits, powered by the five Spirit Pictures across the planet. This peace was disturbed by the sudden arrival of Bagura and his army of robots, who destroyed the Spirit Pictures, resulting in the planet splitting into five chunks without the spirit power to protect it.
Bomberman isn't going to sit idly by while his home planet gets disassembled - he's fighting back against Bagura and his army to restore the Spirit Pictures!
The game that shook up the standards of single-player gameplay for the series. Instead of blowing up enemies, you're blowing up switches this time! Revolutionary stuff right there.
I jest. This game is notable for introducing a new archnemesis for Bomberman, Bagura (who would actually stick around for quite a few years, unlike Super Bomberman's new foes), as well as a new item - the Louie! This colourful kangaroo beast offers Bomberman unique special abilities, and also opened the floodgates for a variety of steeds over the following games.
Yeah, all Bomberman games follow the same basic formula, but Bomberman '94 and Super Bomberman 3 share a lot of ties - both have Louies, both have Bagura, both require you to destroy switches, and they both use the same graphical style. However, the only crew member shared between the two games is Shoji Mizuno, the art director.
This game was later remade for mobile phones with all-new graphics as Bomberman '08, released on the 8th of September 2008, natch. The game never got an English release and it hasn't been made available online, so I have no means of playing it.
