Super Bomberman B-Daman

A small marble-firing toy released in 1993, this simple Bomberman tie-in birthed a whole new franchise for toy manufacturer Takara that ran for nearly twenty years. Aside from the Bomberman license, there's no unifying theme for these early releases, its products ranging from varying colours of Bomberman, video game tie-ins, animal-themed suits of armour, and even original robot mecha for the figures to pilot. The Bomberman B-Daman Bakugaiden subline would take these concepts and refine them with new gimmickry, and even a new story and setting to accomodate them.

Toy info and checklist sourced from 玩具的生活 (Omochateki Seikatsu) , 文句たれるな! (Monku Tareru Na!) (mainline and unnumbered), and やんきちのほうむぺいじ (Yankichi's Homepage).

The very first Bomberman B-Daman toys, and the humble beginnings of the B-Daman toyline, branded as a Super Bomberman tie-in product. The traditional Bomberman B-Daman figurine, measuring 6cm tall from tip of its bobble to its feet and with basic marble-firing functionality: slot the marble into its tummy and squeeze the trigger on its back to fire. Can't get any simpler than that!

Special clear-plastic toys.
Toys #28, #29 and #30 are known to have packaging variants: some have a "ボンバーマン" (Bomberman) caption beneath the B-Daman logo, while some omit it. The caption pushes the text down beneath the bubble, partially obscuring it behind the toy.

Bombermen with chrome add-on armour, including a chest guard, helmet and shield emblazoned with the Fire Up symbol; the shield attaches to the peghole on the back of the B-Daman's hand.
The numbered releases feature flat-coloured Bombermen, the "Yoroi Bomberman" releases feature coloured chrome armour and clear plastic Bombermen, while the copper, silver and gold variants have chrome plastic Bombermen. For some reason, the numbered releases are extremely rare compared to the so-called limited edition variants.

(src: JBA Authorised B-Daman Mutekioh)

The add-on armour gimmick would later be expanded with the Dragon Mail toys, as well as the B-Daman Bakugaiden and Bakugaiden II toylines. This set of armour was also redecoed for the 1994 Lucky Box.

[does anyone have photos of the cardbacks? there might be lore we're missing out on!]

More tie-ins to Super Bomberman 2, putting the spotlight on its new villains. While the base figures are identical to all prior releases, these are the first B-Daman toys to feature unique stickers applied to their faces and foreheads, as well as scarves and cloaks for Plasma, Magnet and Brain Bomber.

1994?

In order to evade detection while investigating the evil activities of the Five Dastardly Bombers and Shadow Bomber, Black Bomberman used the secret ninja art of deception to become "Bakuretsu Black Bomber".
With this power he can transform intoa bomb to deceive his opponents, and maximise his defensive power during battle. However, it is a power to be used carefully and with forward-thinking; the other day White Bomber mistook him for a real bomb and threw him away.

After Bakuretsu Black Bomberman went missing while sneaking into Shadow Bomber's Castle, Blue Bomberman took matters into his own hands and became "Bakuretsu Blue Bomberman".
Transforming into a bomb comes with its perks, like the ability to roll at high speeds and bowl over enemies. The rescue mission was a success, despite a close encounter with Golem Bomber (who mistook him for an ohagi rice ball).

Not a traditional marble-firing B-Daman toy, but instead a toy that transforms from a Bomberman to a bomb. This is performed by opening the head, folding in the body (unlocked by pushing the button its back), and rotating the face panel. Clicking the bobble or striking the bomb with a marble will cause it to unfurl back into Bomberman.

It stands taller than a traditional B-Daman figure, approximately 8.4cm tall (7cm excluding the trigger bobble).

This toy was later redecoed for the B-Daman Bakugaiden IV toyline.

Another set of armour, this time with a dragon-themed design; the Fire, Aqua, and Thunder Bomber Mail each have slightly different horn designs on the top of their helmets. Each toy is packaged with a marble, helmet, chest guard, shield and rod.

The armour pieces can combine together to form dragon transformation (竜変形) mode; the helmet's wings attach to the upside-down shield, the chest guard attachs to its back, and the helmet sits on top to create an upright dragon fascimile.

This set of armour was redecoed for the 1995 Lucky Box with all three crest variants included, and again for the B-Daman Bakugaiden II toyline as "Legend of Dragon Mail" parts-only sets.

A big marble-firing mecha for B-Daman to ride in. The tube on its back can hold up to 10 marbles, and are fired from the lower cannon by squeezing the trigger. The lever on top will squeeze the pilot B-Daman's trigger, firing its marble from the higher cannon. The only assembly required for the Bomber Armor is attaching the arms, tube and cockpit dome.

The Thunder Bomber Armor was only available for purchase at the 1996 Next Generation World Hobby Fair, though it's likely that unsold stock was made available through other avenues - it doesn't seem to be all that rare!

Released to promote the newly-released Super Bomberman 3, depicting the new World Bomber allies.

A series of blind boxes containing a B-Daman figure and a variety of accessories relevant to that year's gimmick and theming. The contents are mostly predetermined, though the colour of B-Daman or specific accessory included is a mystery until the box is opened.
The 1994 and 1995 Lucky Boxes are Super Bomberman 2 and 3 branded products respectively, while from 1996 onwards it adopts the Super B-Daman brand. All releases after that have no affiliation with the Bomberman franchise.

An offshoot of B-Daman released in June 1996 for 500 Yen, firing medals or coins in place of marbles; their torsos are modified (raising their height to 6.2cm) to support the medals either flat or horizontally. The lever on the back flicks the right arm, which has a protrusion on the hinge to propel the medal forward [src]. The medals are 2.4cm in diametre and feature embossed artwork from a variety of Bomberman games; the medal packaged with each toy is random.
The cardback advertises three ways of firing medals: "spin shoot" (スピンシュート), by inserting them flat; "slide shoot" ( スライドシュート) by inserting them horizontally; and "rolling shoot" (ローリングシュート), by inserting them horizontally and tilting the toy on its side.

The Power Shoot Medalman (パワーシュートメダルマン) subline specialised in boxed figures with snap-together clip-on armour that served different purposes. Shoot Supporter came with a front-mounted funnel that assists the medal in firing more efficiently. Battle Scope's arm-guards were intended to flip the lever when the figure is slammed sideways onto a hard surface. Battle Scope is the only Medalman toy to be released in 1997.

(src: toybox2009)

Released alongside the toys was the Medal Collection (メダルコレクション), a cardback containing 6 medals; this appears to be the only Medalman release where the medal designs are predetermined. The card is numbered 01, but it appears to have been the only release.
