Creating Bomberman's first TV anime

Hudson Co. Ltd (president: Hiroshi Kudo) recently began a new franchise around their flagship character, Bomberman, and the development of its first ever TV anime, "Bomberman Jetters".

The new anime "Bomberman Jetters" will begin broadcasting on TV Tokyo (including BS Japan) on October 6th, running from 18:30 to 19:00 every Wednesday. To coincide with this, a wide range of merchandise including video games, card games, toys, apparel, etc. will be produced by Konami Group (a joint operation between Konami, Hudson and Takara).

The Bomberman series has sold more than 10 million units in total since its release on the Famicom in 1985, and its characters have been popular among children and adults . With this anime, we hope it will target the family dynamic more directly in their living room television.

Hudson plan to release video games on multiple consoles from October to the end of the year to support the Bomberman Jetters brand image. Additional planned products include a card game from Konami, toys, apparel and other merchandise from Takara, aiming to further increase recognition of Bomberman and widen our audience. We believe the development synergy between these companies will contribute to the series' popularity.

Before the anime airs, Shogakukan will start serialising Bomberman Jetters in Monthly CoroCoro Comic starting from September. In addition, D-Rights. Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, plans to promote the franchise in Japan and overseas.

Linking TV anime to game story - an industry first!
Between the first and second episodes of the new TV anime, the setting has skipped forward by roughly six months; the Game Boy Advance title "Bomberman Jetters: The Legendary Bomberman" aims to compliment this aspect of the story. It is the industry's first attempt to link TV anime and video games in this manner.

A more extensive press release, further elaborating on the plans mentioned in July and expounding on the demographics and brand recognition they hope to achieve. It's most notable for coining the term "Bomberman Renaissance" (ボンバーマン ルネッサンス), a flowery term Hudson applied to the whole Jetters endeavour; whether it lived up to their expectations is another matter.

(Thank you for your support.)

A hub page for the anime, with links to the websites for the video games and other tie-ins. Features quick pages for the story and characters, and its index updated with a summary of the latest broadcast episode. The final update on September 25th 2003 offered a farewell photograph from the production staff.

TV Tokyo (archive)

A colourful site featuring an overview of the series, a look at the characters and even summaries of each of the episodes. Unfortunately, the site is comprised almost entirely of images with no alt-text, and the Wayback Machine's archive is incomplete, meaning much of the content is lost for good.

Studio Deen (archive)

A miniscule page that just points you to Hudson or TV Tokyo's pages instead. Cute image, though.

d-rights | WORKS (archive)

An English language page from the production and rights management company; I can't find any record of a Japanese page. Bomberman Jetters (originally listed as "Bomberman Series") was under "Titles under Rights Management", or overseas copyright handling from 2004 until 2013 when their site was overhauled. Despite the promises of international marketing in Hudson's press releases, it appears D-Rights just held the copyright but did nothing with it.

Bought from sellers on Yahoo! Auctions, these are photocopies (of photocopies of photocopies of photocopies...) of the model sheets used as reference by the animators.
