“Sick of fighting the same old enemies?”

from Official Nintendo Magazine issue 89 (February 2000)

Nothing related to Nintendo today, and only a tangential relation to video games. I just wanted to talk about this ad. It’s pretty eye-catching! I think when I was younger the image kind of spooked me, but not so much that I had to remember to skip the page or else NO SLEEP TONIGHT (which I admit I had to do a couple of times with a Resident Evil 2 promotional image. We’ll talk about that one another time!)… more of a “that’s kind of unsettling, but man, even I find fault with this.”

Like, why on earth has he got a spike coming out of his mouth? I can get behind the spikes coming out of his face, sure, but why the mouth? Is he going to prick you with his gob? Is it just a precaution so you can’t even punch him in the kisser? It doesn’t give the image of some godforsaken denizen of the underworld, it just looks like someone wasn’t watching what he was eating. In fact, forget the mouth, it looks like he’s submitting a lawsuit against a sushi restaurant for not fully making sure the pufferfish wasn’t dead. We’ll sidestep around why on earth a pufferfish would have metal spikes.

If you care to look around ol’ thorn-gob, we have a sky that’s inexplicably on fire, and some mysterious woman in a cloak. It’s like a rehearsal for a heavy metal CD cover photo shoot.
