Resident Evil: Code Veronica
Written by Galvatron.
Resident Evil: Code Veronica was the first RE game exclusive to a non-PlayStation console (for a while, at least). There are a few interesting things that were changed around in it as it was developed.
This was one of the first images people got to see for the game. First off, the outfit Claire is wearing here was changed twice, but more on that later. Here, she seems to have either ridiculously short hot pants, or denims which are coloured oddly. Also, she is firing an assault rifle in this section, in the final game she doesn't get that weapon until much later on. This area is also slightly different to the final.
From the opening part of the game, there are a couple of differences here. First up, the truck has flames coming out of the top, these aren't present in the final. The only wheel of the truck you can see there also appears to be larger than in the final. There's also something on the floor at the bottom of the image, the brown bar type thing, no idea what that is but it isn't there in the final version.
Quite a few changes were made to the prisoner meal building. Firstly, you can not get a camera angle like this in the final game. Secondly, this area seems to be devoid of zombies - there are around
four of them in the final game, this only shows two. The shelves Claire is close to have different items on them than in the final, as do the tables. The chairs also seem to be
laid out slightly differently.
From a later build, Claire has her costume from Resident Evil 2 on here. This area is also a lot brighter than in the final game, and, more oddly, Claire is brandishing a shotgun, a weapon she can't get in the final, before Chris's first section has been completed at least, meaning that she can't usually have it in the area she is in above. There aren't usually zombies up here either, plus
a green herb is missing from the table behind Claire (although it's most likely that she may have taken it already).
Again, Claire is in her RE2 costume, and this area is much brighter than in the final game.
The prisoner sleeping quarters. Claire is in her RE2 outfit again, and this shot is much, much brighter than in the final game, which looks like this.
This shows a very different spider enemy. Claire's costume is RE2 style again.
Moths, at this stage of the game? They usually don't appear until much later on, when Claire and Steve get to that snowy army base thing.
Another shot of a moth enemy being somewhere it shouldn't be.
Claire in her RE2 costume again... fighting a hunter?! Only Chris gets to fight these usually (excluding the battle mode).
RE2 Claire shooting a zombie with a shotgun, she doesn't usually get that weapon and this area is much brighter than usual.
This shows RE2 Claire shooting at zombies. What's weird is that the zombies are in the prison cell which, in the final game, is where the game actually starts, and no zombies ever get in there.
Better look at that different spider enemy we saw earlier.
As we saw earlier, this is a much better look at the zombies who are in the cell.
In the final version, there is a man sitting as that desk called Rodrigo, he lets you out of the cell, but he's curiously missing from here.
A couple of those different spider enemies, including one which is crawling across the camera!
This is from the part of the game where you have to store any metallic items you have into the security box. This screen shot has slightly different colours to the final version, the box itself, which you can see to Claire's right, has a brown shade on it, for example. It's also not possible to get a camera angle like this in the final.
I can't remember if you can shoot zombie limbs off in this game. I can remember that the head popping shots weren't in it, though.
Note that the clothing covering Claire's left shoulder has been ripped. Possibly you could get different clothing or something at one point, like in the original version of
RE2 (or RE 1.5 as it's also known) but this idea was again dropped completely.
Claire with that shotgun again, the zombies in this room are different to the ones found here in the final version. If you look through all these images this zombie model is the one that appears the most, it's possible they only had a couple working in this preview.
In the final there are zombies in this section, instead there are zombie dogs in the final.
Possible earlier title screen featuring a hunter and a lot of blood. In the final, they just went with picture of Claire, Chris and Wesker.
RE2 Claire again, this area is much brighter than in the final.
RE2 Claire again.
It's a shame that this shot is so dark as it seems to show Claire in yet another different costume.
Another horribly dark image, in the final version of the game there isn't as much fire here.
There is no flaming zombie here in the final version.
