Characters
There really aren't many characters you meet during the game, besides the monsters. Here's my attempt at covering them.
Bomberman |
Bomberman is, as expected, the main character of the game. Merely escorting a few dozen monsters back to his home planet, the Four Commanders came along and thoroughly ruined his day by releasing them on an unknown planet. He makes attempts to crack wise throughout, though the results are pretty hit-and-miss. |
Water Commander |
"The only female of the Commanders, she is strong-willed and specialises in infiltration techniques. Able to manipulate water at will. Prefers to use Rubber Bombs." Being the only female on the crew, as such she is portrayed as a flirtatious, boyfriend-seeking, playful little girl of variable annoyance levels. She also has a habit of blowing herself up, which is probably more sloppy programming than further emphasis on the ditzy stereotype. |
Electro Commander |
"The smartest of the Four Commanders, he is their strategist. Able to manipulate electricity at will. Attacks by discharging 3 balls of energy that chase their targets." Despite being the smartest, Electro Commander sure is portrayed like a cry-baby kid. He pouts and whines and screams about his privacy being invaded and how he claims the engine is his own property now. Considering how much he cries, he probably should've had the title of Water Commander. |
Hurricommander |
"Proud and a little narcissistic. Likes to get things done and see a plan through to its completion. Able to manipulate bombs at will, and can cause waterspouts and tornadoes to form. Also uses Search Bombs." Hurricommander is a weird name. He's the obligatory self-centred jerk of the baddies, he speaks in lots of ellipses and suggests Bomberman to turn back before his inflated ego squashes him. Of course, when you can fly and have a mean-lookin' scarf, I guess you're allowed to feel proud of yourself. |
Pyro Commander |
"Relaxed and laid back, he is the strongest of the Four Commanders. His job is to carry around all of the items the Commanders steal. Able to use bombs with high firepower at will. Can use up to four bombs at once." Now, Pyro Commander is truly sympathetic. It's nice to see a villain who isn't a total jerk, and it almost sounds like he just tags along with the Commanders but doesn't know that what he's doing is wrong. Of course, he pulls no punches and can be a fearsome foe. |
Policeman |
Because of the rampaging monsters everywhere, these guys won't let anyone past until they decide not to be jerks (which is conveniently after you've completed the previous Zone). Going going hindering Bomberman's attempt to save your world, guys. |
Old man |
This crazy old man is obsessed with trading cards, and will happily give a Robot Bomb to anyone who shows him three rare cards. That's all he has to offer, however; after that he'll merely give you a hearty "good luck!". |
Bomb fuser |
The merry old bomb fuser lets you take useless rubbish and fuse them with explosive cores to make weapons of destruction. |
Pouting woman |
What with all the monsters rampaging and everything, this woman stays at home all days and mutters about it, indirectly threatening to clobber Bomberman for letting it happen. Even after all the monsters are caught she's still repeating the same rant. |
Librarian |
The librarian may not be a librarian, but she stays in there all day, so that's good enough for me to name her that. She's apparently an adventurer as well, in search of Teleport Armour, but she, like the pouting woman, is pointless in terms of story and gameplay. |
Chaos Bomber |
Chaos Bomber is the ringleader of the Four Commanders, and can not only fly, but also create bombs anywhere, shoot electricity and shockwaves, fire homing beams and turn into an orb. He's essentially like Hurricommander, except less self-centred and more of an all-and-out jerk, with cheap skills. Amusingly, his surprise appearance is spoilt by the Leather Armour explicitly mentioning his name quite a while before he shows up. |
Mami |
Mami shows up as a secret character, and proceeds to break the fourth wall by stating what she is. She also has no means of directly harming you, meaning she's quite possibly the most useless enemy ever. |
Ruisha |
Ruisha is another secret character, and automatically trumps Mami by the fact she can not only harm you, but also avoid your attacks. Pity she's still easy to defeat. |
Deral |
She attempts to take the spotlight from Bomberman, and does so with a duel, which may have been an interesting dilemma if it weren't for the fact she lacks any resemblance of fighting skill. |
Pump |
This guy serves no purpose at all to the story or gameplay, but he's there. |
